Head colds are not gifts to be shared in the Christmas season. Out annual trip to Camden, ME for their "Christmas by the Sea" festival fell upon hard times when Elizabeth got a head on Thursday, gave it to Rachel for Friday inyo Saturday and then gave it to me for Sunday into Monday. The town was fine, the inn was lovely as always, but the illness cast a pall over everything.

The only upside has been the chance to plow through _Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell_, which has turned out to be as good as people had told me it was.

Obviously the return to sleep was not easy after the late night fire alarm - at least for the adults. Elizabeth proved remarkably adaptable and went right back to sleep for another 6 hours. The next morning was chilly, and we decided to just forgo the last beach morning and go home. We were out of the hotel by 8:00, having finished the last of the sourdough for breakfast. I cannot stress enough the joy of the sourdough.

Tuesday was due to be rainy in the afternoon, and the morning made it clear that the rain was on the way - it was colder, windy and generally unsuited to beach time, despite our efforts. So we asked Elizabeth what she wanted to do. The answer was unequivocal: Play Mini-Golf!

Monday was another pretty day, with our morning starting with breakfast and then beach time. Much fun was had by all, especially now that the water wasn't too seaweed stricken or cold to dissuade people from going in for a bit. Elizabeth did OK with the water, but it clearly freaked her out more than it had on her last trip to the beach, despite her repeated assertions that she was "Not afraid of water."

The next morning started early when Elizabeth - off kilter from lack of sleep and being in a different place - woke up at 5 AM. We had to bring her downstairs to sleep with us (something we only do on vacations) to squeeze and extra hour of sleep out of her. But the day was warm and the skies were clear, so we thought the day had great promise. After breaking our fast we brought her back down to the beach where she played in the wet sand and the dry sand, but was turned off by the water, full as it was with seaweed churned up by the remnants of Hannah the night before. It was a lovely morning.

But wait, there's more! )

Last weekend Rachel and I braved the inherent Massachussetsyness of or norther border and took a 4 day vacation to Cape Cod, staying in the same place that [livejournal.com profile] netcurmudgeon  and [livejournal.com profile] ashacat  used earlier this year. The trip was slightly delayed Saturday morning by the need to stop at the farmer's market to get some fruit and sourdough from this place, which has sourdough to die for.
