Instead of completely changing everything about your house, you may want to consider putting together a baby jail. These gates (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265804) can be picked up at your local Babies'R'Us and can connect to the wall on the ends or to each other and can be strung across a room, so you can cordon off a section of a room that's baby proof without having to move other things that are mostly immovable like tvs and fireplaces. Our living room is about 2/3 dedicated to the babies using 2 gates with the floor level window, bookshelf of dvds, fireplace, tv and exit blocked off. Just a though.
