We did the first all-in-one-place discussions for Emirikol PCs today, and ended up with this:

* Bec is playing a Sorcerer of the landless nobility who is in debt to someone for the money she borrowed to pay for her familiar bonding. I'm not sure what her fencing style is yet, but her spells are Mage Armor, Magic Missile and True Strike. Her race is likely half-elf.

* Tom is a nobleman whose family estates have dwindled to just a house in Emirikol, but that house contains an extensive library of fencing manuals & historical texts (which contain clues to locate various tombs). Class wise he is a Rogue/Fighter whose family style focuses on speed and feints.

* Dave is an orphaned nobleman whose cousin/guardian is systematically robbing his estates and looking for legal loopholes to keep the land. Trained as a bard, he plans to use his dramatic training (and theater magic) to survive in the city as he seeks inexpensive-yet-expert legal aid.

* Jim is a nobleman who has his land, but is distinctly homely due to centuries of inbreeding - ala a late-era Hapsburg. I'm not sure what threat he faces or back story he carries, but with his funds (he's an Aristocrat/Fighter) and face I'm sure we'll find something. His race is half-elf.

Some of the players felt the setting was more gritty urban fantasy (which is could be if you want), but the gritty urban fantasy problem of minimal funds is less of an issue in my mind: those of you with debts have huge debts, but day to day funds are easy enough to come by. I expect the poorer PCs will spend money somewhat lavishly to maintain their air of prosperity, perhaps go into low end debt, then hit a big score, pay off the small debts and quickly spend down their new funds. You'll probably be spending money at 80 to 120% of the speed at which you make it. Of course, since Tom wants to own a house and Jim still has lands funds are less of an immediate concern in any case.

Based on this initial discussion, I see the group living in Tom's house in the city, with Dave and Bec constantly borrowing from Jim and then paying it back when things are going well. Dave's brother is a looming menace, but a legal rather than physical one. Tom's library is a ready made store of plot coupons, and perhaps the source of some troubles. Bec is constantly being hounded by her creditor, who likely will resort to force at times.

I'd like it if everyone could lay out how they'd a couple ways they'd like to see their characters end up - becoming a Paladin, joining the a church, retiring to their lands after a year in the city, standing over their cousin's corpse, etc. It might not end that way, but just so I have an idea.

My justification why the secret occult traditions of the theater would include Cure Light Wounds: that way onstage fight scenes can be much more realistic!

Thus, it is so! And I now have the option of doing even more damage to the party!

And I do like the idea of the theater having secret occult traditions.

Reading this, suddenly Lauren Bacall's speech about finding a rich husband in "How to Marry a Millionaire" suddenly popped into my head.

Are the characters going to be secretly pawning off Tom's furniture in order to afford nights out at the club, claiming that it has been "sent out to be cleaned"?

I'm getting a very Phoenix Guards feel about this game.

I should certainly hope so! That's the goal!
