We had [livejournal.com profile] evynrude over this weekend and managed to get a couple of hours of combined character creation and baby-watching while Rachel took a nap. Evynrude had been concerned about stepping into the Russia game at some point because there was an ongoing history for it, so I tried to diffuse that by giving her a clear explanation of everything that has happened to date - I trust that she can keep her character from knowing things she shouldn't.

I had created a PC for her some time back, but decided to ditch it in favor of her building one with me to get a greater player buy-in. This was enormously successful. Strangely, the class combination (Barbarian Bard) is identical, but the concept is radically different - rather than a unicorn touched Cossack earth-cultist, she's a renegade Gypsy with a fierce temper. The look on Evynrude's face when she heard that Romany was an available race (OK, they're Gnomes in D&D, but I don't have actual non-human races in Russia) pretty much clinched the deal.

She's apparently making the reference department at her library look up information on Russian Gypsies, and is genuinely enthused about playing. A little buy in is a good thing.

BTW, I tracked down Order of the Stick this afternoon, and have devoured the first, oh hundred and thirty of them. Really, damn funny.

...I agree with the folks who said that the writer is playing Elan for a fool, and only kind of poking fun at bards. OTOH, his treatment of Bag of Tricks in strip 130 shows a complete lack of understanding of how useful small things can be!! What a pultroon! :-)

In some later strips Roy does a much better job making use of the bag. Roy's not an idiot, after all. He has friends for that.

I came to those later last night ... he has groove down.

I haven't laughed so hard and so often in a very long time. OotS has been a great tonic.

I admit to bursting out saying "Belkar's got a new hat!" and then giggling madly. Glad the strip suggestion has been working for you.
