With events binding them it was no surprise that the Dee twins, Juliet & Jasmyn wound up sharing a compartment on the Hogwart’s Express. It was a warm enough day that no one minded when Juliet opened the windows – since her mother’s death she has suffered from bouts of claustrophobia – as the train made its way north to Scotland.
Daisy was in the prefect's cabin with the other 21 prefects, the Head Boy (a Slythrin, Owen Mardling), & Head Girl (Ravenclaw Alyssa Aerie). Owen congrat-ulated the new prefects, laid out his role as the top layer of management amongst the students, and the need for clear lines of communication, message control & proper coaching. He's full of buzzwords but clearly following a different route than his predecessor, Slythor Mac-Kraken. At this there was a relieved sigh; obviously Slythor was not well loved. (Tom: “I don’t intend to rule with his weak and forgiving hand! You will long for the days of Slythor!”) He handed out a list of first years to each of the new prefects, so they can identify their charges. The sorting hasn't happened, but Alyssa did family research and these are their predictions based on available data.
Finally he introduced the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Briar (calling her Chrysalis in a presumptive informality), who is taking over after Professor Pellinor left. He mentioned her time as an Auror, did not mention her house & wished her a long & happy time at the school. Briar was polite, answered the prefects questions and, while excusing herself, asked Daisy after her sister and the others. Daisy led the professor to the first year’s compartment.
Meanwhile, after the kids have chatted, they got a visit from Grendel Green, flanked by Peri Undulata and Roberta Resquiat. Grendel came down to say hello to the Dee brothers. It was everyone’s expectation that one or both of the Dee brothers, what with their well known Slytherin father, would be sorted into Slytherin. No harm in saying hello to students with whom he fully expected to get placed. He then asked some questions about their father, who is serving as a representative on the Wizengamot, busily trying Death Eaters.
Roberta had a dizzy spell proclaiming that someone is this room was…going to die! Castor replied “if we extend the time period long enough, that’s true for all of us.” “No,” the girl replied with great theatricality “There is an aura of death in here” “Perhaps you brought it with you!” Jasmyn offered buoyantly, looking for an excuse to try reading a classmate’s runes, a trick she loves and has no talent at.
Then Peri said something about mudbloods – turned out Mrs. Moore was one of those too, leading to more seething from Juliet – but Grendel corrected her before Juliet could snap. “We've been down that road and you see how that turned up. It's time to find a new path." The little meeting ended and Juliet stuck her head out the window to fight the sudden feeling of closeness.
Shortly after this Professor Briar and Daisy arrived. The Professor told them she had captured Woden. She warned them that Woden is vindictive and, as an Oneiromancer, has special weapons to bring to bear, even from his prison cell in London. Informing them that the train counts as being at school, she taught them the basics of a protection spell - Mentat Acutia - that banishes the daydreams which could give an Oneiromancer entry. She'll be working on a defense for their sleeping dreams, but has faith that Olaf will be in Azkhaban before she is able to finish it. Everyone is grateful except Juliet who later shares her concerns that Prof. Briar might be Reg in disguise, given how she appeared in the ally at the same time Reg vanished; the argument that she only appeared to appear as everyone in the alley was blinded did little to settle her mind.
The remainder of the trip is unexceptional: chocolate frogs are purchased & consumed, Jasmyn “read Juliet’s Runes” (i.e., threw rune stones and made things up) and speculations were made about school. At the end of the line they and the other first years were pulled aside into the boats. Their craft also held Lochland Fitztoggle, a huge boy whose size makes up for the petite stature of the Dee twins & Juliet. Lochland seemed pleasant, if a little quiet. Or perhaps that was just in relation to Jasmyn, who was busy trying to talk to the squid.
