but it gives 6 success levels, not 7, for a roll of 21-23. Which would give a total of 20.
Sorry if I wasn't clear - she _rolled_ a 26, giving her 7 success levels. The base damage was 14 for her strength + 7 for her success levels for 21. Hence the 21 x 4.
In the 2/e book, it lists damage for a knife as 2xSTR, with a note that it is slash/stab damage. This is opposed to a punch for 2xSTR bash damage. Bash attacks "reduce Life Points normally" while the Slash/Stab damage description says "Double this damage agasint most creatures , after subtracting for armor or simmilar protection (if any)... Slash/Stab modifiers are not used with attacks Through the Heart or monster bite attacks; in that case the Thtough the Heart or Bite multiplier replaces the slash/stab damage multiplier."
My read of that is that if Doris punches someone with 7 success levels she'll do 21 damage. If she stabs them with a knife she'll do 21 base, doubled for the slash/stab for 42 (assuming they didn't have armor). If she stabs through the heart she'll do 21 base quadrupled for 84, or 105 if she's staking a vamp (as stakes have the same base damage as a knife).
In 2/e, Through the Heart lists that it "quadruples the damage (after applying base damage, Success Levels, armor; this multiplier replaces the damage type modifier)" Is this a change in editions? Because as you have it written, there is no difference between lodging a sword through the heart (a Str x4 base damage for Through the Heart) and attacking with a sword (which 2/e lists as Strx4 Base damage). Your way certianly delivers less damage, which is nice, but it's not how I'm reading the book.
