I remember that auditory illusion, too. The sound of a car rolling outside, a furnace kicking on, the wind blowing in some leaves, and I would suddenly sit bolt up in bed wondering, "Is she crying again?", and then pause to realize it was all in my head.
You eventually get out of this habit when you little one turns about 9 months to a year old...(I think presbycusis that occurs with aging--yours--helps too).
