Vacation Thoughts
Dec. 5th, 2007 03:51 pm We spent Christmas by the Sea (the first weekend in December) in our traditional winter vacation spot of Camden ME. it was a lovely time, if cold: these were the coldest days that we've ever had up there, even with our usual January-February arrival times. This prevented us from doing some of the activities - no one wanted to wait on a harbor facing hill with the ice cold wind for the 7 PM tree lighting when the parade ended at 6:20, for example. Being the planing sorts that we are we are sending the chamber of commerce a letter on what they might do to improve things next year (other than reduce the cold, which is either out of their control or they have been hiding their possession of a weather control device). Still, a lovely time was had.
We've been going to Camden for 8 years now and always wax rhapsodic about how nice it would be to be snowed into our B&B. The romance diminishes some when you have a toddler along. Going out into the snow starts to look darn good when the 19 month old gets bored.
The return trip included a stop in Freeport to break up the 6 our drive. In doing this we learned six important questions to ask the proprietors of any B&B before our first night there:
1) If check in time is at 2:00, do you actually intend to be there at 2:00?
2) Is the room advertised as a "Cozy common room with fireplace off directly off of the suite" actually your family's living room, which will be occupied by your surly children and their friends who will bang in and out of the house at all hours?
3) Does the claw footed soaking tub in our bathroom actually hold in water, or will it drain constantly no matter what we do?
4) Does our room, in fact, have heat?
5) Do you and your spouse intend to have an argument about the family finances in front of your guests while serving breakfast the next morning?
6) In short, do you have the slightest idea how to run a B&B?
These are things we have learned. I thought we should share.
