Not so Joltin' Joe
Nov. 8th, 2006 07:17 amTo no ones great surprise, the incumbent won in the Connecticut Senate race, even though no party had him on the ballot. Joltin' Joe won re-election in a walk despite all his hang dog woe is me they're all picking on me commentary during the debates and when interviewed. Some are reading this as the importance of governing from the center and keeping a big tent, and to an extent it is. However, it is also a statement on the power of incumbency and name recognition, and a statement about the state of Connecticut.
It's a fact that if Leiberman hadn't been running Lamont would also have won it in a walk: with the mood in the state right now there was no way we were sending a novice hard right tax cutting Republican to the senate. So despite all the tea leaves it hard too see this this as a referendum on anything other than possession being 9/10ths of the law. For all that he's voted conservatively and is pro-war, I can't imagine him caucusing anywhere than with the Democrats, so control of the Senate isn't an issue.
To be clear, I don't like Leiberman, and haven't since his first re-election campaign in '94 when he stressed how he'd taken on the makers of 'those violent video games' to protect our kids. Joe, I didn't have a kid then, but I do now, and I'm damn all sure I don't need your help in vetting what she can and can't be exposed to. The fact that you got elected bothers but doesn't surprise me, and having to deal with at least 2 years of you enjoying the position on the fence and being courted by both sides for votes is irksome. I'm not going to read anything into it that's not there, however: if you hadn't been running my cat could have carried this state on the democratic ticket. So don't be so full of yourself.
On other notes: yea, Divided Government! Maybe we'll see some accountability for the next couple years. That'd be swell.
