I had forgotten how much Cherryh there was in Traveller -- the whole "battle rider" concept comes from her books, and the whole "Gehenna Doctrine" aka leave the planetary societies the hell alone.
There's also a heck of a lot of stuff from E.C. Tubb's "Dumarest of Terra" series -- traveling in "low passage" in the freezer, a blade weapon called a "blade," and (I think) armor called "jack." And of course a huge dollop of H. Beam Piper.
I guess really it was kind of an alchemical distillation of thousands of old SF stories, many of which borrowed from each other, plus Star Wars. Not much Trek, though. I guess that show's utopian idealism didn't sit well with the gritty military-sf realists at GDW.
