New Dawn Write Ups

These are well after the fact, but I did eventually want to post them here. Once they're all up I'll be making some public musings on how I might have improved the campaign.

Session 1

Characters of import, in order of appearance

Hadassah Clarity: a human wizard and member of the Kaer law enforcement. Hadassah has cinnamon colored skin and dark hair, and, like most wizards, has decorated her robes with needlepoint. Staggeringly smart, she has learned the secrets of astral space and the mind, and is mastering the true names of edges, speed and locusts.

K’aedreeka Nareethapuju: a t’skrang beastmaster, ‘Dreeka has leathery purple skin with green highlights, a crest on her head and lower neck and a long tail. She also has a pet shoulder dragon and has been trained to survive and hunt in the outside. She is charming and simply oozes charisma, generating an almost immediate sense of intimacy.

Voilodion Gasnazdiak: A human thief who has a day job (OK, cover) as a chef, Voi is of indeterminate appearance (i.e., I forgot to write it down) but cultivates an air of seediness. As a Thief he is bound by ancient agreements with the Kaer dating back to its founding, and has been named the head of this expedition by the counsel.

Silver Swordstory: A human weaponsmith, Silver is possessed of an unbreakable will that has developed into a meticulous work ethic under the eyes of her master smiths. In the movie, she’s being played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. She has a weaponsmith’s mastery of languages and driving hard bargains. Her brother is Whisperwind.

Whisperwind Razorshot: A human archer, “Razor” is quick, keen eyes and just as focused as his sister, Silver (though not quite as iron willed). In the movie, he’s being played by Antonio Banderas. Like ‘Dreeka, he is trained to survive in the outside, and also how to perform battlefield surgery should the need arise. His sister has enchanted his arrowheads.

Dex Rakshasa: A troll warrior, Dex is huge even for a troll, standing 10 feet tall and weighing in at 650 lbs with mahogany brown skin, a ridged cranium, protruding lower canines and bushy hair in a thick ponytail. He has just learned that he was trained from childhood to kill horrors, and is armed with a Troll Crystal Sword magically re-forged by Silver.

Harak Krul: the orkish archer and security head of the Havan council, Krul is the patron of our heroes’ mission. He has laid it out to them that the kaer must see if the outside is safe because they are approaching the point of social instability due to population pressure, and the risk of an invasion from Thera looms over them. He’s made it clear that the agents were selected because they were highly skilled, young, mentally flexible and, ultimately, expendable, and that if they succeed they will be lauded as heroes, but if they fail no one will ever know they left – he doesn’t want to produce a false sense of hope in the populace.

Other notes:

After they accepted Councilor Krul’s offer, Dreeka and Hadassah threw themselves into their research on outside beasts, stellar navigation and other things that might be necessary on the outside, while Razor and Dex worked on their combat teamwork. Silver dedicated herself to improving some of their weapons while she still had access to a full forge, scoring great successes on Dex’s crystal sword & hand axe and subtly improving Razor’s arrowheads. Voilodion scoured the underground and markets, quietly outfitting his expedition with the best equipment available, knowing that they would have to travel light, with no pack animals, to maximize their speed and flexibility in the unknown lands.

On the last morning in the Kaer the six were bid goodbye by Councilor Krul and slowly let out of each of the seven sealed gates (the previous closing behind them before the next one opened for them). They were warned that, on their return, they would have to wait a full day at each door before it would be opened to maximize the chances that any imposters or horror taint would be detected. Their ability to contact the Kaer from the outside would be highly limited. Quiet literally, they were on their own.

When the final door was opened they learned that the outside time was no longer in synch with the Kaer, as it was still night outside. They felt a natural breeze, carrying with it a salt odor and a tang of loam, and heard the cries of several birds. Dex’s heat sensitive eyes were the first to see the flickering energy to the east as the sun rose, revealing that the plains that once surrounded Hava have been replaced by a vast body of water – ocean, ‘Dreeka surmises from the salt smell. The door to Hava is halfway up a sparsely vegetated mountain, with dense woodland in the land the slopes down to the beach and the water, some miles distant. Everything has changed, except the stars, which confirm that they are where they were: Hava hasn’t moved, but the world has irrevocably altered around it.
