Duty and Obligation

Well, we had [livejournal.com profile] netcurmudgeon's annual Halloween game scheduled for today, but I'm not going to be able to make it. A call came in Friday that a friend's father had died, and therefore today will be spent going to the funeral and reception afterward. Not how I would have chosen to spend the day, but I would not do any other thing.

We are all of us bound by webs of duty and obligation, which read flat on the page (or screen) make it sound like they are things that we would avoid if we could. They're not, however - while I wish that there had no been a death, since there was one I would not choose any other course of action than to stand beside my friend and provide him with support. It is these individual connections, this web of obligation, that makes civilization possible. These little things are not little when you're right on top of them.
